The Foundation to Make Habit Sticks

So, yesterday I tried to make a new habit to wake up at 2 a.m. everyday. And I did wake up today around 3 o'clock, a little late I know. I feel so refreshed and all, I feel so fired up to start the brandnew day. But guess what, I didn't get as productive as I thought I would. I wake up 2 hour earlier than usual, I have all the time necessary to make a change. But I just sit there on my bed and do nothing. Now what's the problem? Where did I go wrong with this?

I realized later in the evening that the problem is I didn't tell myself "Why" I want that habit. So of course without any reason to wake up at 2, I wouldn't know what to do, so might as well go back to sleep. This holds true for every habit I successfully made. I need a reason to do it. Whatever will do. Having a reason or a why will help me stay motivated and focused on my goal. The more specific the better. Rather than "to be more productive" be more specific and say "I'll wake up at 2 so that I could do more with blogging (or studying/excercising/whatever)". This will create a mental image and connection in my mind. And I'll be motivated to do it.

This might sound obvious, but the next time you want to make a new habit be sure to tell yourself why you want it. what's the benefit, the good, the perks? And enjoy the proccess the next time you do that habit.
